Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Kari and I am the owner and lead photographer for Kari Marie Photography. I have been a full time photographer for 6 years. I actually started my photography journey in my home state of Iowa. I stared out part time photographing families and kiddos, and then moved on to full time once I started photographing weddings as well. We moved to the Houston area for the beautiful weather and endless opportunities.

How do you balance motherhood with running your own photography business?

I have a pretty amazing teenage son. He is actually a huge help during family photo sessions, getting little ones to smile or laugh. He also assists me for most of my weddings as well—he is a huge help with setting up lighting and keeping me on track!

What kind of photography do you do?

I am known for my wedding photography, but I really enjoy photographing families, kiddos, and high school seniors as well.

What are your favorite types of photo shoots?

My favorite photo shoots are ones that allow me to be creative, typically when off-camera lighting (flash) is involved. I can really create some magical night time photographs with off-camera lighting.

If you could choose a destination to photograph, what would it be?

Santorini, Greece.

Whose work has influenced you most?

I feel like most people would probably name a famous photographer that truly inspires them; however, I get a lot of my influence and drive from so many of Houston’s amazingly talented photographers. It’s true! We live in a great city filled with amazing talent! I feel truly blessed to call Houston home!

What inspires you?

I think what inspires me the most is the fact that I have an awesome job and get to work with and meet a lot of families along the way. The fact that I am trusted with some of life’s most important memories is truly inspiring to me.

How would you describe your photography style?

I would describe my editing style as very true to the day and classic. I love crisp, clean images that highlight the day just as it was. My working style is very fun and light-hearted. I love capturing candid moments.

If you could photograph any one person or subject matter, who or what would it be?

I already feel pretty lucky with the amazing families and couples that I get to photograph; however, if I could be a full time dog photographer, that would be the icing on the cake of an already amazing job!

What is your favorite aspect of your career?

I have two favorite aspects of being a photographer. The first thing is being able to show people how beautiful they are, to show them the way others see them. I love to help people feel good about themselves—it’s truly a highlight of any session. Secondly, what I create will live on and be cherished for years to come.
