An Interview with The Village School…

By Corey’L Sams

Tell us a little about the event.

The fashion show is one of the most surreal nights at The Village School. Students are transformed through creativity and self-confidence. They create lifelong memories and execute an artistic vision. It is an experience unlike any other for most of our students who participate. We have so many talented students at our school who are remarkably passionate about the visual arts and I am just grateful to be able to provide this experience for them.

What guidelines were given to the students?  How long in advance did they have to prepare?

Students must create a design that follows the theme of the show. However, the theme is intentionally broad and open to interpretation. In other words, the only limitation is their own imagination. Some students prepare for this event all year and some start preparing two weeks before the program. I have had students email me over the summer asking what the theme is so that they can create while school is out on break. Some students team up to create one design while others wish to make something on their own. The art teachers facilitate and guide students rather than assign and direct.

Were the designs created at home or did they have an option to work on them during a class period?

Some designs were created at school and some were created at home. They have the option to work on them at school during lunch, advisory, study hall, or during the class period if all assignments are completed.

As far as the logistics of the show, what other students were involved in the production?

This year I had one back stage manager, three backstage assistants, and two emcees. These students play different roles in organizing the show. The emcees helped write the shows scripts. The backstage manager and the assistants coordinated casting calls, model measurements, and after-school rehearsals.
