The Center for Postpartum Family Health (CPFH) is Houston’s first private counseling center dedicated to providing the best in mental health care for mothers and their families during pregnancy and after pregnancy.
Postpartum mental health affects over 900,000 American women every year in the U.S.
- 50 to 80% of women experience “baby blues” – A common condition of mild to moderate depression which resolves two to three weeks after delivery.
- Perinatal mental health disorders occur in up to 20% of expectant and new mothers, and include pregnancy and postpartum depression and anxiety, postpartum OCD, and other adjustment disorders
- 80% of these cases go untreated
CPFH is here to help new mothers and their families stay happy and healthy during this important stage of family life. Services include: Free weekly support group, sliding scale counseling services, evaluations for pregnancy and postpartum depression and anxiety, parenting, couples and family therapy, counseling for infertility, grief, birth trauma and life transitions. Medical referrals are made as needed.
Sherry Duson, founder and director of CPFH, has been working with new mothers and their families since 1999. She’s had a private practice as a marriage and family therapist for 18 years and for 10 years led weekly support groups for pregnancy and postpartum depression and anxiety at Houston area maternity hospitals. She is a member and former chair of the Yates Children’s Memorial Fund Advisory Board at Mental Health America of Greater Houston, and a professional member of Postpartum Support International (PSI.) She was co-chair of the PSI conference, held in Houston in 2008.
Healthy moms equal healthy babies, and healthy families. The Center for Postpartum Family Health helps fill the gap of mental health services available to new mothers in the greater Houston community.
