Creating Family Memories in Style

Exploring San Antonio with small children is a family-favorite adventure. It’s almost a rite of passage for all new parents to navigate strollers up and down Riverwalk stairs, cobblestone paths around the Alamo and, oh, those unfenced cement banks of the Guadalupe River with toddlers who insist to walk. Don’t worry, the water is never deeper than four feet, but your heart goes out to the parents who must jump in to fish a kid out.
One of the best ways to cut the tourist tension and frenzy is a 25-minute drive northwest of downtown San Antonio to La Cantera Resort and Spa. This family oasis sits on a tall plateau overlooking two lush, award-winning championship golf courses and impeccably landscaped pools. On the entrance-side, just far enough away and down the hill, is Six Flags Fiesta Texas, a theme park full of new and exciting rides, characters and fireworks most Saturday nights during the season.
For families with young children, you can do as little or as much as you please. Bring a blanket and sit on the lawn near Plaza San Saba to play, or for a small fee, grab a seat at City View Terrace to watch the fireworks (Fourth of July is one of the BEST resort-planned events); pack swimsuits, floaties and sunscreen for the maze of slides, kids’ pool with private cabanas.
Packing lucky golf clubs or essential baby gear isn’t a fight anymore. The resort partners with Babierge, a baby-gear rental company with top-of-the-line products. Menus offer full-size cribs to travel set-ups for the pool; toddler toys and books to high-end strollers and joggers in brands you’ve only dreamed of owning. Most items are no more than $6-11 a day. Diapers, wipes and toiletries are also available. While it’s best to order early to secure the items you know you’ll need, a two-hour delivery is possible for a fee.
Staying put and never leaving is a favorite option, but free shuttles are available to local attractions and nearby shopping at The Shops at La Cantera and The Rim. On-site, SweetFire Kitchen offers a cozy and friendly atmosphere for the whole family- whether its steaks and wine at dinner or the expansive breakfast menu. For lunch, the Primero Cantina was the perfect alfresco experience for me and the kids while my husband played golf. One afternoon, I took my turn for some much-needed R&R at Loma de Vida spa with a refreshing organic drink from the spa’s juice bar, Quenche. The spa view is one of the best on property.
No matter if you spend one night or several, the accommodations can’t be beat with a beautiful Junior Suite just the right size for kids who go down early and grownups who enjoy beautiful sunsets with wine in hand from your own balcony. It’s at the end of each day that you realize La Cantera Resort and Spa delivers what’s promised: something for everyone at every age or stage to make picture-perfect family memories.
